About the Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend oil refinery
Located 17 miles southeast of Minneapolis, the Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend refinery is a landmark like no other in Minnesota. The tall columns, bright lights at night, and steam clouds on cold winter days can be seen from miles away. Less visible are the more than 1,000 men and women who work hard each day to produce products that are essential to modern life. With their help and with contributions from hundreds of local contractors, the refinery recently completed more than $400 million in innovations and other improvements that build on the refinery’s standing as one of the safest and most efficient refineries in the United States.
For more than 65 years, the Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend refinery has played a major role in producing transportation fuels used throughout the Midwest, including most of Minnesota’s gasoline, diesel fuel, and jet fuel. The refinery also produces other products people rely on such as propane, asphalt, and heating fuels; and the chemical building blocks essential for products such as plastics, fertilizers, medicines, and synthetic materials. Pine Bend has a capacity of 375,000 barrels per day, and is among the most efficient and safest oil refineries in the country. Pine Bend has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR ® certification five years in a row since 2020, signifying that the refinery performs in the top 25% of manufacturing facilities nationwide for energy efficiency.
Flint Hills Resources directly and indirectly supports more than 4,000 Minnesota jobs and has invested nearly $1.7 billion on upgrades and improvements to its Minnesota facilities since 2010.
